Heol y Cyw FRC - 36pts
Cefn Coed RFC - 3pts

The last game of the Season saw Heol y Cyw travel to Cefn Coed and come away with a comfortable win to cement their promotion to Division 3. From the kick off Cyw put pressure on their opponents and after 20 minutes were leading 19-3 with 3 tries from Paul Cooper and Rhys Owen (2), with Gareth Howe converting two. Cefn Coed replied with a penalty. Cyw moved the ball at every opportunity but failed to add to their score before half time.

The 2nd half saw Cyw attack at every opportunity with Cefn defending well. THe visitors forwards linked well with their backs and 3 more tries were scored by Gareth Witts, Adam O'Driscoll and Richard Howells with one conversion by Gareth Howe making the final score 36-3. One of the highlights of the 2nd half was the return to the pitch with 25 minutes left of Club Captain, Chris Howe, who suffered a serious injury and major operation earlier this year. It was good to see you back Chris and you showed you have lost none of your skills, determination and enthusiasm for the game.

Man of the match for Heol y Cyw was Rhys Davies.

Heol y Cyw FRC - 10pts
Porth RFC - 10pts

This clash between 3rd and 2nd in the Division was vital to both Teams in their quest for promotion this Season. The drawn result, which was a fair reflection of the play, means that Heol y Cyw cannot lose their 2nd spot in the table and irrespective of any games to play have gained promotion to Division 3.

From the kick off the visitors applied pressure which resulted in Captain Gareth Howe putting over a penalty after 2 minutes. Cyw maintained their pressure and after 15 minutes a flowing move from inside their half saw them attack down the left but just when a try seemed on the move broke down inside the Porth 22. This gave the home side heart and their large pack started putting pressure on Cyw and for a 10 minute period were camped near the try line in the left corner.

Although defending strongly a Cyw forward received a yellow card for a technical offence which Porth took advantage of and after another series of 5 meter scrums one of their forwards eventually crossed the line for a try which was converted. On the stroke of half time, after more pressure on the left, Porth moved the ball along the line and just when it seemed they would score in the corner Alan Bateman put in a magnificent try saving tackle.

Half Time 7-3 to Porth

For the first 10 minutes of the 2nd period Heol y Cyw played inside the Porth half but strong defence prevented them from scoring. It was then Porths turn to apply the pressure which they converted into 3 points when their outside half dropped a goal. 10-3. Cyw then began to move the ball among their back line and only desperate defence prevented them from scoring.

10 minutes from the end another flowing attack from Cyw was halted on the try line when a home forward killed the ball and received a yellow card for his efforts. The visitors continually battered the home line and just before time replacement hooker, Dean Jones, took a strike against the head for Cyw, the ball was quickly passed to Gareth Howe who crashed through the Porth defence to touch down in the corner. Everything rested on the conversion from the right touchline which Howe calmly sent between the posts to tie the scores 10-10 and secure promotion for Heol y Cyw.

Man of the Match for Heol y Cyw was awarded to Gareth Howe but the whole team deserve credit for their efforts in this game and the whole of the Season. After relegation last year, to win promotion at the first attempt, speaks loudly for the skill and determination of the whole team under the brilliant coaching of Alun Howe and Geoff Griffiths. Well done to everyone.

Heol y Cyw FRC - 35pts
Senghenydd RFC - 8pts

Heolycyw travelled to Senghenydd hoping for a win and bonus point to maintain their promotion challenge. In the opening exchanges hooker Dean Jones took a strike against the head and scrum half Paul Cooper went over in the corner for an unconverted try. Cyw`s heavier pack put pressure on Senghenydd, with young Andrew Cooper scrummaging well, winning good possession to put the backs away, but an interception by Darren John resulted in a corner try to level the scores.

Senghenydd were penalised for killing the ball to allow Gareth Howe to edge Cyw in front. After a heated forwards exchange a player from each side was yellow carded, then Senghenydd levelled the score with a penalty. Adam O`Driscoll picked up and ran 25 metres to score, showing his strength and determination. Another penalty from Howe made it 8-16 at the interval.

Early in the second half Dean Jones took a tap penalty, and after slick interpassing Jones crossed for a try wide out. Cyw`s backs were now getting plenty of good ball and centre Steve Beasant went over for a fine try, Tom Cross converting.

A technical infringement cost Cyw another yellow card, and fly half Howe left the field with a blood injury. Young Cross came up to fly half, scoring a neat try to emphasise his talent. Later in the game Cross put in a chip kick which Alan Bateman gathered to put Richard Howells under the posts. It had been agood open game, played in excellent conditions, and sets up an interesting end of season for Cyw`s promotiopn push.

The final score was 8-35, givng Heolycyw a bonus point.

11th April 2009
Heol y Cyw FRC - 52pts
Tonyrefail RFC - 22pts

Cyw maintained their top of the table spot with a convincing win over a Tonyrefail team who never gave up. The home Team scored first with a penalty from Gareth Howe. Tries followed at regular intervals from Paul Cooper, Rhys Owen and Steve Beasant one of which was converted by Gareth Howe. Tonyrefail replied with a penalty making the half time score 20-3.

With the wind at their backs in the 2nd half Cyw cut loose and with some excellent passing movements involving forwards and backs scored 5 more tries from Richard Howells, Paul Cooper, Tom Cross, Rhys Owen and Steve Beasant. Gareth Howe converted 2 and put over a penalty. Not to be outdone Tonyrefail crossed for 3 very good tries 2 of which were converted. Although all Cyws tries were scored by backs the forwards deserve credit for providing the platform which enabled the backs to show their ability.

Cyw are still in with a chance of promotion but must win their remaining 3 games, all of which are away, to make sure.

Man of the Match was Scrum Half Paul Cooper

11th April 2009
Heol y Cyw 2nds - 14pts
Tondu 2nds - 22pts

Cyw travelled to their near neighbours and narrowly lost an entertaining game. Cyws tries came from Paul Howe and Kyle Lowry, one in each half and both were converted by Lyndon Elward.

4th April 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 54pts
Taffs Well RFC - 6pts

The spring sunshine must have been to Heol y Cyw's liking because they put on their best display of attacking rugby this season and overwhelmed a Taffs Well 15 who were hardly in the game after the 1st try was scored by Cyw. This came from a scrum near the Taffs Well line in the corner which was won by the visitors, the ball was quickly moved infield to centre Steve Beasant who sliced through the defence to score under the posts. Gareth Howe converted. Just after this Cyw lost their Captain and Hooker, Luke O'Driscoll, through injury and it was his replacement, Darren Oram who scored the next try in the left corner to make the score 6-15. Taffs Well had earlier put over 2 penalties with Howe kicking one for Cyw. In the 10 minutes before half time Heol y Cyw scored 2 excellent tries, first when No 8 Adam O'Driscoll picked up at the base of a scrum just inside the Taffs Well half and broke down the blindside before releasing winger Richard Howells to secure 5 points; the 2nd when Cyw stopped an attack outside their 22 and broke out of defense with Allan Bateman releasing full back, Tom Cross who outpaced the Taffs Well backs in a 60 yard dash down the left touchline before running around behind the posts. Both tries were converted by Gareth Howe.

Half Time: Taffs Well 6 pts Heol y Cyw 29pts.

5 minutes into the 2nd half Cyw drove a scrum 5 giving Adam O'Driscoll the chance to pick up and force himself over the line for an unconverted try. Soon after Taffs well attacked down the centre but Cyw turned the ball over just inside their 22. Their forwards released Allan Bateman who drew the defence before once again putting Tom Cross in the clear for another 60 yard run down the line to score in the right corner. Shortly after, wing Rhys Owen moved to scrum half and from a 5 meter scrum received the ball from Adam O'Driscoll before racing through for a try. Gareth Howe then smartly dropped a goal.

Just before full time Heol y Cyw again ran the ball from inside their 22 and it reached Gareth Witts on the right who ran 50yards before touching down behind the posts for the 8th try of the game which was converted by Gareth Howe.

Final score: Taffs Well 6 pts Heol y Cyw 54pts.

Man of the match for Heol y Cyw was Adam O'Driscoll but credit must go to the whole Team, the forwards who dominated their opponents and the backs who ran the ball at every opportunity. This bonus point win keeps Cyw on top of Division 4 South East with Pentyrch and Porth breathing down their necks making an exciting end to the Season. Cyw have 4 games left and their 2 rivals 5 each.

24th March 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 17pts
Dowlais RFC - 3pts

Heol y Cyw continued their winning run and maintained their spot on top of the Division with a hard fought win over Dowlais under lights at Greenfields on a wet and windy evening. Cyw started the brighter but were unable to trouble the scorer because of the visitor's resolute defence. Rhys Owen was prominent with several runs down the left wing without success. It was the visitors who went in front from a penalty when Cyw strayed offside in front of the posts.

Handling errors were frequent under the conditions but on the half hour Cyw had a scrum just outside their opponents 22, the ball was moved left and when the move was halted No 6 Adam O'Driscoll was on hand to receive a pass and cross the line for a try on the left. Although kicking into a strong wind Gareth Howe put over an excellent conversion from the left. Shortly before half time Howe put over a penalty after an opposing forward handled in a ruck. Half time: 10-3 to Cyw.

Kicking Off with the wind at their backs Cyw soon put pressure on Dowlais but a combination of good defence and handling errors kept them at bay until 15 minutes into the half. When Dowlais won a scrum inside their 22 the pass back into their in goal area was fumbled and Cyw's No 7, Gareth Roberts beat the defence to the loose ball for a try converted by Howe.

17-3.

To their credit Dowlais fought back and put Cyw under pressure on several occasions but a strong home defensive effort prevented them from scoring. Despite coming close on several occasions Cyw also failed to add to their score.

Man of the match was awarded to  Tom Cross (Full Back)

13th March 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 10pts
Porth RFC - 3pts

A top of the table clash failed to provide the good rugby anticipated. The first half was pointless and notable only for the excessive number of penalties given away by both sides. The referee struggled to keep the game flowing and had to issue 2 yellow cards to each side. Neither side really threatened the try line with most of the play taking place between the 22s.

From the start of the 2nd half Cyw began the better and started putting together several phases of play with forwards and backs combining well. After 10 minutes Porth gave away another penalty just outside their 22 and Gareth Howells made no mistake to put Cyw ahead.

After 22 minutes center Steve Beasant kicked into the Porth half and when he tried to follow the kick was flattened by a Porth player. Gareth Howells took the subsequent penalty but saw his effort hit the inside of the right hand post, rebound onto the left hand post b efore dropping back into the field of play. It was gathered by a defender but he was bundled over the line by Cyw players following the kick.

From the subsequent 5 meter scrum the home side spun the ball to number 10 Gareth Howells who cut between the Porth centres to score a good try which he converted. 10-0.

5 minutes from the end, after another flare up between the forwards the Porth Captain was shown a red card. Although playing with 14 men Porth forced Cyw to conced a penalty in front which was converted with the last kick of the game to give them a losing bonus point.

Final score 10-3.

Man of the match for Cyw was Darren Oram.

7th March 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 15pts
Cardiff HSOB RFC - 7pts

Heol y Cyw RFC maintained their position at the top of the Division with an excellent win at Cardiff. The score didn't do justice to their dominance for most of the game.

From the kick off the Cyw forwards tore into their opponents and kept them on the back foot continuously. After 15 minutes Cyw stole a lineout on the right of their opponents 22 and set up a series of pick and go drives which saw them reach the try line allowing 2nd row Rhys Eskins to ground the ball for the opening score. 5-0 to Cyw. The rest of the half saw pressure from Heol y Cyw with occasional break outs from their half by Cardiff. Despite the pressure the home defence stood firm and reached half time with no addition to the score.

The 2nd half pattern followed that of the 1st with Heol y Cyw dominating possession and territory. After 15 minutes the Cardiff full back received the ball from a ruck on his 22 but before he could clear his line two of Cyws O'Driscoll brothers were on him, Luke and Adam combined to charge down the kick and Luke followed the ball over the try line to ground it for 5 points. The conversion was put over by Gareth Howe. 12-0. A few minutes later Cardiff gave away a penalty in mid field and Gareth Howe made no mistaked to put the visitors 15-0 ahead. From this point the match seemed safe for Cyw but 10 minutes from the end Cardiff seized on a dropped ball in midfield, the ball was hacked on which allowed a Cardiff player to claim a try which was converted. 15-7.

The home team were encouraged by this score and tried to up their game but were constantly knocked back in the tackle area by the Cyw players. Throughout the game the Cyw forwards were immense and dominated the bigger Cardiff forwards in the loose and pressured them into mistakes. The backs also played their part and defended well when called upon and moved the ball along their line at every opportunity only for the home defence to deny them tries on several occasions.

The man of the match award was shared by Heol y Cyws back row of Craig Beasant and Adam and Josh O'Driscoll but the whole Team deserves a pat on the back for their efforts. On loan Tom Cross also showed some nice touches and seems to be settling well into the Cyw style of play.

Next Friday Cyw are at home to Porth RFC Kick Off 7.15pm. Come along and support your team for this 1st v 3rd clash. With 7 points between the teams and 2 games in hand to Porth a home win is essential for Heol y Cyw to maintain a clear lead at the top of the table.

28th February 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 18pts
Abercwmboi RFC - 11pts

Heol y Cyw maintained their place at the top of the Division with a close win over promotion rivals Abercwmboi. Both Teams were totally committed and fought hard for the points. In the first 10 minutes both gave away silly penalties which resulted in Cyw leading 6-3. on the quarter of an hour a Cyw kick out of their 22 was charged down, the visitors recycled the ball and moved it wide to the right for their winger to score in the corner. 6-8.

More penalties were given away by both sides and after the referee issued a general warning to both teams more transgressions resulted in yellow card being shown to an Abercwmboi back and a Heol y Cyw forward. Heol y Cyw regained the lead with the last kick of the 1st half when Captain Gareth Howe making his return from a lengthy lay off through injury kicked his 3rd penalty. 9- 8 In the 2nd half Cyw began to apply more pressure but it was Abercwmboi who scored first with yet another penalty. 9-11. Practically from the restart an Abercwmboi player strayed offside and Gareth Howe regained the lead. 12-11.

Cyw were now getting the better of their opponents but stern defence prevented them from crossing the try line although 2 more penalties were converted into points by Gareth Howe which saw the Home Team eventually run out the winners by 18-11. After a close game Cyw just deserved the win but could not deny their opponents a losing bonus point.

Man of the Match for Heol y Cyw was 2nd row Rhys Eskins.

21st February 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 13pts
Llantwit Major - 8pts

Cyw kicked off with a strong wind at their backs but it was the home team who made all the early running. Despite their pressure the visitors defence held firm. Midway through the half Cyw started to come more into the game and made several determined attacks without success. Shortly after Chris Howe, the Cyw Captain, suffered a serious head injury and took no further part in the game. After 33 minutes Cyw opened the scoring when the ball was won on the right just inside the Llantwit half, it was quickly moved along the line to the left when full back Richard Howells entered the line and cut through the defence for a good try. The conversion failed. A few minutes later after another attack down the left Llantwit turned the ball over but their kick out of their 22 only reached left wing Gareth Witts who ran strongly infield and linkjed up with backs and forwards. The ball reached right wing Rhys Owen who outpaced the defence for a corner try. 10-0 to Heol y Cyw at Half Time.

Llantwit kicked off and immediately put pressure on Cyw but it took them 15 minutes to open their scoring with a fine try on the left, followed 3 minutes later with a penalty. With the score now 8-10 and the wind at their backs it looked as if Llantwit would overwhelm Heol y Cyw. But the visitors dug deep and with their lighter pack continually forced Llantwit back into their own half and kept them pinned there for long periods. The home team had to defend desperately to keep Heol y Cyw from crossing their line but 12 minutes from the end gave away a penalty which was calmly put over by No 10 Tom Cross making his debut for Cyw. This was the last score of the game with Heol y Cyw deserving their win and maintaining their position at the top of Division 4 South East.

Man of the Match for Heol y Cyw was hooker Luke O'Driscoll but mention must be made of Tom Cross, making his debut and Craig Beasant marking his return to Heol y Cyw colours with excellent games. Kevin Green also shone at the front of the lineout.

31st January 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 10pts
Pentyrch RFC - 13pts

This top of the table clash turned out to be a close affair which Cyw should have won but missed kicks and indiscipline cost them dearly.

After the early exchanges Cyw went in front after 15 minutes when good approach work took them into the away 22, Captain Chris Howe received the ball and made a determined run for the line, when he was held up short he had enough support to drive him over for a try which went unconverted. Shortly after a Cyw forward was yellow carded which allowed Pentyrch back into the game. As soon as Cyw were back to full strength they were again reduced to 14 men when another forward received a yellow card. Pentyrch pressed in the home half but when they conceded a penalty the ball was kicked to touch on the left. From the lineout Cyw moved the ball along the backs to the right. Winger Richard Howells was stopped just short of the line but No 8 Adam O'Driscoll was up in support to gather the ball and dive over for a good try.

The conversion failed. Cyw were now in control but on the stroke of half time conceded a penalty on the Pentyrch 22, the subsequent kick failed to find touch but a terrible bounce back infield allowed a chasing player the opportunity to hack through and win the race to ground the ball for a fortunate try. Half time: 10-5 Cyw pressed their visitors at the start of the 2nd half but a determined Pentyrch defence kept them out together with Cyws habit of giving away penalties when in good positions. 12 minutes into the half Cyw's flanker received a 2nd yellow card which turned to a red.

Pentyrch now came more into the game and 20 minutes from the end reduced their arrears with a penalty. 10-8. From the kick off they put pressure on Cyw and after several phases of play and driving mauls crossed for a try on the right to take the lead for the first time.

The final 10 minutes saw Cyw's 14 men put tremendous pressure on the Pentyrch defence and mount wave after wave of attack without success.

The final whistle came shortly after the visitors winger received a yellow card.
Cyw remain top of the Division by 2 points but Pentyrch have a game in hand. Poor goal kicking and indiscipline cost Cyw dearly and they can't expect to win games when they play for 50 minutes with a man short.

24th January 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 22pts
Llantwit Major - 9pts

To-days match was vital for both Teams to maintain their positions towards the top of the Table and after an even first 15 minutes it was the visitors who went ahead with a penalty.  PLay was quite physical and in the space of 2 minutes yellow cards were issued to 1 Heol y Cyw player and 2 from Llantwit before Cyw No 8 Adam O'Driscoll took the ball on halfway at a Llantwit lineout , he drove powerfully  down the centre of the field before setting the ball up for his backs who moved the ball quickly along the line to left wing Rhys Owen who crossed in the corner.  5-3 to Cyw.  No sooner were both Teams restored to full strength when Cyw were reduced to 14 and then 13 men when 2 more yellow cards were issued.  Llantwit took advantage of this and put over 2 more penalties to reach half time leading 9-5.

2nd Half
Cyw took control  of the game and dominated possession and territory but Llantwit kept them out until the 20th minute when Cyw won a scrum 5 and fed No 10, Kevin Ellis who crossed wide out on the right.  Adam O'Driscoll put over the conversion and Cyw were leading 12-9.  Llantwit lost another player to a yellow card and Cyw crossed their line twice only for the referee to disallow the efforts of Rhys Owen.  Cyw then applied more pressure and Captain Chris Howe scored in the corner after a series of drives by the home forwards.  Shortly before the end Cyw disrupted a Llantwit scrum 20 yards out, wing Rhys Owen quickly seized the loose ball and raced for the line to score a bonus point winning try.

Final Score:  Heol y Cyw 22pts  Llantwit Major 9pts.

Heol y Cyw now go 5 points clear at the top of the table although most teams have games in hand.

Man of the Match was Adam O'Driscoll who impressed with his strong ball carrying and dynamic work in the loose.

Second Team Match:
24th January 2009

Heol y Cyw RFC - 32pts
Bridgend Sports - 0pts

Heol y Cyw entertained Bridgend Sports in the semi final of the District Plate Competition and convincingly won by 32pts to 0 in a highly entertaining game.

Man of the Match was awarded to flanker Chris John.

17th January 2009
Heol y Cyw RFC - 35pts
Ferndale RFC - 5pts

For the first 20 minutes although both teams tried hard neither could get on top and play was even until the visitors had a scrum in midfield in the Cyw half and moved the ball swiftly to their left wing who went over in the corner.  This setback spurred Heol y Cyw on and they began to dominate possession and after good work by the forwards No 10 Gareth Howe crashed over on the left for a try.  5-5.  A few minutes before half time Gareth Howe received the ball just inside his half, steadied himself and sent a magnificent drop goal between the posts.  He repeated this on the stroke of half time from a shorter distance.

Half Time:  Heol y Cyw 11pts - Ferndale 5pts.

For most of the 2nd half Cyw dominated play and possession but it took
15 minutes before they added to their score when full back Richard Howells entered the line and stepped around his opposite number to touch down near the posts. Gareth Howe converted to make the score 18- 5.  Cyw remained on top for the rest of the half and increased their score with 2 tries from wing Rhys Owen and one from 2nd row Rhys Eskins.  Howe converted one to make the final score 35-5 to the home team.

With so many good 2nd half performances any number of players were in contention for man of the match but it was decided that it be shared between Gareth Howe, returning from injury and Rhys Owen.  All the forwards deserve a mention for providing so much good ball for their backs.

This win, with a bonus point, keeps Cyw sharing the top of the table position.

26th December 2008
Heol y Cyw RFC - 6pts
Pencoed RFC - 0pts

35 YEAR WAIT IS OVER

Boxing Day 1973 was the last time Heol y Cyw beat Pencoed in the annual "friendly" fixture by 9pts to 3pts. All Cyws points were scored by Gordon 'Flash' Cooper, the father of current Welsh Scrum Half Gareth Cooper. Since then all results went Pencoeds way. The fixture fell by the wayside during the 1990s but was resurrected during Heol y Cyws Centenary Season 3 years ago. Before today all results went to Pencoed although all games were keenly contested.

Boxing Day 2008 saw Cyw make the short journey to Pencoed and stun the home supporters and team with a deserved 6-0 win. A large crowd, full of festive spirit, saw Cyw kick off in bright sunshine and take the game to their Division 2 West opponents. After 10 minutes Pencoed conceded a penalty in mid field which was calmly converted by Lyndon Elward. Pencoed began to apply pressure and had most of the possession and territory but failed to break a resolute Cyw defence. Backs and forwards combined to continually knock Pencoed back in the tackle.

As half time approached the visitors applied began to apply pressure in the home 22 but gave away silly penalties which enabled Pencoed to relieve their line.

Half Time: 0-3

The same pattern continued in the 2nd half with Pencoed pressing and Cyw defending ferociously before breaking out into their opponents half. Play continued to swing from end to end without any addition to the score until 5 minutes before the end. Cyw stole a Pencoed lineout on the left and when the ball reached Heol y Cyw Captain and stand in No 10, Chris Howe, he calmly slotted over a drop goal much to the disgust of the home supporters who thought the ball missed the left hand post. However, the referee was perfectly placed and awarded 3 pts to Cyw. The final whistle came soon after with Pencoed still vainly trying to break through the outstanding Cyw defence.

Final score: Pencoed 0 Heol y Cyw 6

Heol y Cyw Man of the Match: Every player deserves congratulations for their efforts but the award is shared by fellow back row forwards Gareth Roberts and Adam O'Driscoll.

20th December 2008
Heol y Cyw RFC - 11pts
Treherbert - 8pts

SWALEC Plate Cup Competition Round 2

From the kick off Heol y Cyw took the game to their hosts of Division 2 East and pressured them into mistakes and giving away penalties which were unfortunately missed. After 15 minutes Gareth Howe, making his return after a knee operation, put up a towering up and under which Treherbert failed to deal with. The Cyw loose forwards quickly recovered the ball and it was moved along the line to Alan Bateman who threw a long pass out to wing Richard Howells who crossed for a try in the right corner. The conversion failed. Just before the half hour more Cyw pressure forced the home team to give away 2 penalties in as many minutes in front of the posts. Howe made no mistake and Cyw were 11-0 up. Shortly after Gareth Howe had to leave the field with a groin injury. Just before half time Treherbert narrowed the lead with a penalty from Huckridge.

Half time: Treherbert 3pts Heol y Cyw 11pts.

Howe was sorely missed in the 2nd half and Cyw spent most of it defending onslaught after onslaught from Treherbert. The visitors defence was oustanding and time after time they forced Treherbert back until after half an hour of play after a series of scrums in the left corner Huckridge managed to scramble over for an unconverted try making the score 8-11. Not to be outdone Cyw came back at Treherbert and when Kevin Greene took the ball in his own half he fed No 8 Adam O'Driscoll who burst through the home defence and went on a run to the right corner which was only stopped when he was forced into touch just short of the try line. Treherbert came back at Cyw in a desperate attempt to win the game but the Cyw defence held out and the final whistle came with the Division 4 South East leaders defeating their Division 2 East opponents.

Full Time: Treherbert 8pts - Heol y Cyw 11pts.

Man of the Match for Heol y Cyw was shared by Sean James and Darren Oram

13th December 2008
Heol y Cyw RFC - 30pts
Senghenydd - 23pts

After 10 minutes of even play Cyw took the lead with a penalty from Chris Chilcott. THe home team began to take control of the game and when the ball reached Alan Bateman on halfway he sliced through a gap in midfield, drew the full back and passed outside to wing Rhys Owen coming in on the angle who crossed under the posts for a good try.

Chris Chilcott converted to make the score 10-0. Within 5 minutes Cyw won their scrum on their own 22 and good interpassing between forwards and backs saw desperate defence stop them just short of the line in the left corner. Cyw quickly recycled the ball and scrum half Paul Cooper crashed over for a try. The conversion just failed. 15-0.

From the kick off Senghenydd were awarded a penalty in front and made the score 15-3. With half time loomimg Sengenhydd charged down a kick out of the Cyw 22 and a series of handling errors saw the ball cross the line for a gratefull Senghenydd player to fall on it for a try which was converted. 15-10. Cyw immediately hit back and when Kevin Green stole a Senghenydd lineout on the 22 the ball was moved infield to full back Richard Howells who entered the line at speed and crossed under the posts. Chris Chilcott put over the conversion to make the half time score 22-10.

In the 2nd half Senghenydd belied their lowly league position and although they never really created anything they tackled like tigers and pressured Heol y Cyw into mistakes and giving away silly penalties which resulted in a scrambled converted try and a penalty making the score 22-20. Cyw now had to dig deep and evantually Chris Chilcott succeeded with a penalty. 25-20. The Cyw forwards started to dominate and pushed the opposition off the ball in several scrums until from a Senghenydd scrum 5 meters from their line, they were again driven back until the Cyw scrum half Paul Cooper picked up and forced himself over the line to earn a bonus point. 30-20. In the 5th minute of injury time a Cyw player needlessley gave away a penalty which Senghenydd converted to earn a losing bonus point.

Final Score: 30-23.

Man of the match for Heol y Cyw was Alan Bateman who impressed with all he did. Prop Darren Oram and full back Richard Howells also deserve mention. Because Abercwmbois game at Porth was called off, this win sees Heol y Cyw leapfrog them into top spot in Division 4 South East.

6th December 2008
Heol y Cyw RFC - 20pts
Tonyrefail RFC - 0pts

Cyw kicked off in bright sunshine but the standard of play in the 1st half didn't match the weather. Although both teams fought hard for control play was littered with mistakes and penalties. Both teams showed a great deal of committment but half time came with Cyw leading by a solitary penalty from outside half, Chris Chilcott.

Cyw started playing more expansive rugby during the 2nd half and started moving the ball along the backline although the next score was another penalty from Chilcott after 5 minutes. After 20 minutes Cyw won a scrum on the left between halfway and the 22, when the ball reached Alan Bateman he pushed a grubber kick behind the Tonyrefail defence and was winning the race to the ball when he was tripped from behind. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try converted by Chris Chilcott.

10 minutes later Cyw broke out of their 22 with brilliant passing between backs and forwards until the move broke down with a forward pass just short of the Tonyrefail line. Cyw disrupted the Ton scrum and recovered the ball which was moved quickly left and then back to the right when full back Richard Howells entered the line at speed and crossed for a very good try converted by Chris Chilcott. Although the game appeared won by Cyw Tonyrefail made determined efforts to get on the scorebaord but solid defence kept them out. Final Score 20 - 0 to Heol y Cyw which keeps them in 2nd place in the division.

The man of the match award was shared between wing Steve Beasant and scrum half Paul Cooper. Alan Bateman, Darren Oram were also prominent. A good feature was the Cyw lineout. The jumpers won all their own ball and severely disrupted the Tonyrefail throw ins.

Heol y Cyw RFC - 27pts
Ferndale - 10pts

Heol y Cyw started brightly in this Plate encounter and went ahead after 5 minutes when Scrum half Rhys Owen followed up his kick through to score a try converted by Chris Howe. Ferndale fought back and levelled the score a short while later with a good converted try. For the remainder of the half both teams struggled to gain countrol in what was becoming a very physical encounter. Shortly before half time Ferndale went ahead with a penalty to lead 10-7 at the interval.

With the wind at their backs in the 2nd half Cyw began to control the game and levelled the score with a penalty after 7 minutes. From the kick off Cyw regained control of the ball, it was moved left to wing Richard Howells who put a long kick into the left corner. He followed up and forced the defence to put the ball in touch 5 metres from the try line. He took a quick throw in, received the ball back and strolled over the line for a good opportunist try converted by Howe.

17-10. Another penalty made the score 20-10. The game was made safe 10 minutes from time when the Cyw pack disrupted the visitors scrum in the centre of the field, flanker Josh O'Driscoll secured the loose ball and when scrum half Rhys Owen received the ball he made ground before putting Captain Chris Howe in the open and he crossed for a try which was converted.

Final Score 27-10

Man of the match was awarded to No 8 Adam O'Driscoll who carried the ball well and made good yardage. Mention must also be made of Wayne Howe playing his first game for the 1st Team at No 5 who had a solid debut.

1st November 2008
Heol y Cyw RFC - 19pts
Taffs Well RFC - 0pts

For the first 15 minutes both teams fought hard to take control of the game without success and only succeeded in giving away too many penalties which prevented either team settling into a rythm. After 20 minutes Cyw won a scrum in midfield, No 8 Adam O'Driscoll picked up and made ground, when he was stopped the ball was recycled to Chris Howe who broke through the Taffs Well defence to cross the line near the posts for a fine try which he converted. 7 - 0 to Heol y Cyw. This remained the score at half time.

Within 3 minutes of the restart Cyw scored another try when they pushed the visitors off the ball on their scrum. The ball was moved left and chipped over the advancing Taffs Well defence for full back Richard Howells to run through, gather the ball and touch down wide out on the left. The conversion failed.. 12 - 0 to Cyw.

With 15 minutes to go Cyw had the put in at a scrum on the visitors 10 metre line, Adam O'Driscoll again picked up and made good ground, he was well supported by fellow forwards Kevin Green and Gareth Roberts before the ball was passed to scrum half, Paul Cooper, who crossed for a good try converted by Howe. 19 - 0. To their credit Taffs Well fought back and made several determined attempts to get on the scoreboard but good Cyw defence kept them out.

Final score 19-0.

Man of the match for Cyw was No 7 Josh O'Driscoll but close behind was scrum half Paul Cooper. This victory lifts Heol y Cyw to 2nd place in Division 4 South East.

Heol y Cyw RFC - 0pts
Caernarvon RFC - 8pts

Heol y Cyw RFC made the long trip north to play the Division 4 North Champions of last Season and the unbeaten League leaders this season in Round 2 of the SWALEC Cup.

By the time they arrived in Caernarvon the weather had deteriorated and the match was played in strong winds and pouring rain. With several 1st Team players unable to make the trip because of work commitments Cyw fielded a weakened side with several players out of position. Nevertheless they put up a credible performance and playing against the wind in the 1st half kept their opponents scoring efforts down to a very good try and a penalty.

Half Time: Caernarvon 8pts, Heol y Cyw 0pts.

With the wind at their backs in the 2nd half Cyw put the home team under a great deal of pressure but Caernarvons defence kept them out although Cyw spurned a couple of penalty kicks in front in an effort to cross for tries. Despite all their efforts and territorial advantage in the 2nd half Heol y Cyw failed to score and the final whistle went without any addition to the half time points. Man of the match for Cyw was prop Darren Oram with his fellow front row partners Luke O'Driscoll and Andrew Cooper not far behind. Special mention must go to young Andrew Cooper in his 1st Season out of youth rugby and playing his 1st game for the 1st Team. He had an excellent game and showed much promise for the future.
Well done Andrew.

18th October 2008
Heol y Cyw RFC - 16pts
Dowlais - 15pts

For the 1st 15 minutes most of the play took place between the 22's with Heol y Cyw having slightly the better of the play and they deservedly took the lead after 18 minutes with a penalty from Gareth Howe. 5 minutes later the home team drew level with a penalty in front. Cyw now started to apply pressure and Dowlais defended manfully until Captain Chris Howe fielded a kick in his own half and went on a strong diagonal run for 50 meters into the opponents 22 before the ball reached 2nd row Chris Thomas out on the right who crossed in the corner with 3 defenders hanging on to him in a vain attempt to prevent the try. Dowlais 3 - Cyw 8. Cyw remained on top for the remainder of the half but there was no addition to the score although they were reduced to 14 men when a yellow card was shown for handling in a ruck.

Half Time Dowlais 3 - Heol y Cyw 8

A Cyw mistake from the kick off allowed Dowlais to make ground down the left and after a period of pressure in the away 22 they scored a try in the corner. 8-8. Even though Cyw were back up to full strength they found it difficult to get out of their own half. Dowlais were certainly the better team at this stage and when they went over for another try near the posts, which was converted, it looked ominous for the visitors. 15-8. But their spirit and never say die attitude brought them back into the game and for the last 18 minutes continually battered away at the Dowlais line but good defence kept them out.

After taking a couple of tap penalties inside the home 22 which came to nothing No 10 Gareth Howe successfully converted another. 15-11. With time running out Cyw launched a series of attacks and eventually crossed the line on the right but Richard Howells was held and prevented from grounding the ball. From the resulting 5 meter scrum Chris Thomas picked up and drove infield towards the posts but was stopped 1 meter out, the ball was quickly recycled and moved left along the backs to wing Rhys Owen who touched down in the corner for a match winning try. The conversion narrowly failed. Final score: Dowlais 15pts Heol y Cyw 16pts.

Man of the match was awarded to Rhys Owen for his determined play throughout the game but all other members of the team deserved credit for never giving up, particularly the back row of Adam & Josh O'Driscoll and Gareth Roberts who are not the biggest unit in the Division but must be the quickest and most tenacious. Captain and centre Chris Howe also leads by example and his co-centre Allan Bateman is a joy to watch with his slick passing and solid defence. Well done Heol y Cyw.

11th October 2008
Heol y Cyw RFC - 37pts
Cardiff HSOB - 20pts

Cyw kicked off in perfect conditions and slightly shaded the early exchanges and went ahead after 10 minutes when they won a lineout on the right on their opponents 22, the ball was moved across the line to the left and after a series of driving mauls No 3 Stuart Williams drove for the line, spun out of a tackle and grounded the ball.

5-0 Cardiff applied pressure from the kick off but good defence kept them out. After 20 minutes Cyw secured the ball from their lineout on their 22, No 8 Adam O'Driscoll drove determindley down the middle and the ball then moved brilliantly among the backs to wing Richard Howells who crossed in the left corner for an outstanding try. Again the conversion failed. 10-0. The visitors fought back and their No 12 seemed to run through the entire Cyw side to score by the posts. The conversion was successful. 10-7. Minutes later Cyw full back Lee Huckridge fielded a kick on his 22 and then made a brilliant run deep into his opponents half before finding hooker, Luke O'Driscoll out on the left who thundered down the line and crossed in the corner. 15-7.

Mike Huckridge put the conversion over. 17-7. Again HSOB came back and reduced the difference with a penalty infront.

Half time 17-10
Within 2 minutes of the restart Cyw went 20-10 up with a penalty from Mike Huckridge. Cyw now took control and prop Justin Short drove down the centre of the field into the visitors half, supplied good ball to his backs who moved the ball to wing Rhys Owen who crossed in the right corner 25-10. The gap narrowed with a penalty 25-13 before Cyw No 8 Adam O'Driscoll picked up from a scrum in centre field just in the Cyw half, ran deep into the visitors half before the ball was moved right between forwards and backs to No 10 Gareth Howe who crossed for another fine try. 30-13.

Not to be outdone HSOB fought back and scored a good converted try in the right corner. 30-20. Immediately from the kick off, lock Kevin Green took the ball and brilliant passing between backs and forwards moved the ball first to the right and then back infield where full back Lee Huckridge was up in support to take the ball from brother Mark to score under the posts. Mark converted. 37-20. HSOB never gave up and mounted attack after attack but could not breech the Cyw defence. Final score 37-20 with Cyw securing a bonus point and inflicting a first defeat of the season on Cardiff HSOB. Man of the match for Cyw shared between the two flankers Gareth Roberts and Josh O'Driscoll.

Half Time Abercwmboi 0 Heol y Cyw 3 Conditions in the 2nd half were no better but Abercwmboi came into the game a little more and play swung from end to end without the scoreboard being troubled until 15 minutes from the end when Abercwmboi moved the ball along their line to score wide out on the right to take the lead 5 - 3.

The 2nd half continued in the same vein until Ferndale kicked through and the full back was up in support to take a pass and go over for a try which was converted. 16-6. Cyw fought back and after good work by their forwards centre Chris Howe broke through and sent a long pass out to winger Rhys Owen who crossed the line for a fine try, converted by Huckridge. 16-13 Ferndale went further in front with another converted try from a kick through and chase. 23-13

Cyw looked out of it until Huckridge slotted another penalty. 23-16. Cyw now upped their game and just before full time their forwards again won good quick ball from a ruck, moved it quickly along the line to Rhys Owen who outpaced the home defence to score in the corner. Huckridge then sent a magnificent kick through the posts to convert the try and tie the game.
